RDH - Master Security Lock Management System

Client:  Department of Construction and Infrastructure
Value:  $80k
Timeframe:  2010 - 2011

The Department of Construction and Infrastructure (DCI) engaged UNO Management Services (UNOMS) to assist Royal Darwin Hospital in the development and implementation of a Master Security Lock Management System.

The existing Security Lock Management System consists of a number of departmental manual recording systems which work in isolation of each other. The system is extremely complex and fragmented with various departments engaging their own lock management system. Departments maintain their own records of allocations to team members. As a result a number of locks have been allocated and entered into digital databases without the knowledge of the Royal Darwin Hospital Campus Security Department.

The aim of the project is to develop a Master Security Lock Management System that will allow the Royal Darwin Hospital Campus Security Department of fulfill its responsibility and provided a system that provides security and safety to its team members, equipment and the buildings. The system will enable Royal Darwin Hospital Campus Security Department and its Executive Management Team to define different access levels for team members.

While the project is still in its infancy a significant amount of research into locks and lock systems has already been undertaken and discussions have been undertaken with several members of Royal  Darwin Hospital.

Kirsty is the Project Director Responsible for overseeing the project from concept through implementation, undertaking the hospital audit, and liaising with numerous members of the hospital so as to ensure the most suitable Master Security Lock Management System is implemented. Ewan is the Project Manager responsible for undertaking existing infrastructure reviews; reviewing alternative master lock solutions; determining funding requirements; and preparing cost estimates. Jan was responsible for collecting existing information regarding the existing lock systems utilized on site; and determining funds required for the project.

Key Program Achievements:

  • The first stage of the project has allowed a decision to be made towards the type of lock system to be implemented.

Relevant Key Project Learnings:

  • It is important to ensure the Client has sufficient funds to not only take the project from concept through to design but also through to implementation.

  • It is important to define the project area of works when you are working on a site as large as Royal Darwin Hospital with numerous buildings and departments.
