Yandicoogina Upgrade

Client:  RioTinto
Value: $20M (Full drainage management project, study undertaken in house)
Timeframe:  2004

Yandicoogina upgrade involved the design, development and construction of a Flood Diversion Drain road, road drainage, realignment and potable waterline realignment for RioTinto's Yandicoogina access road which provided access to site for triple road- trains. Kirsty was Senior Project Manager responsible for managing the design of the civil infrastructure, road works, this included drainage management around the mine and ore stockpiles, and attaining capital expenditure approval for design and implementation on behalf of the Client. The design involved: drainage management, pavement design, rehabilitation of disturbed areas, schedule of quantities, cost estimates, prepare drawings, tender documents and specifications, formal reviews with client, design reports and management of construction.
The hydraulic assessment involved a review the whole catchment for various ARI's to determine the most cost effective design solution for the highest protection for the site.

Key Project Achievements:

  • Drainage design was sufficient to provide 1 in 50 year storm protection to the mine site.
  • Road design included: pavement design, drainage design, tender documents quantity and cost estimates, drawing, construction specifications, revisions and design reports.
  • Road design undertaken on time, to budget and to a high quality.
  • Hydraulic Design was able to determine a cost  effective design for a 1 in 50  year ARI.
  • Design and construction passed the test of time after two rare 1 in 50 year storm events left the mine in working condition.

 Project Learnings:

  • Development of good quality relationships on site assisted in the smooth delivery of the project on site.
  • By undertaking a sufficiently detailed survey a high qualify hydraulic assessment could be undertaken.
