Groote Eylandt Maintenance Works, New Houses and Subdivision

Groote Eylandt program involved the provision of houses, infrastructure, and maintenance services for Groote Eylandt, Gunbalanya and Milyakburra Communities. Of most relevance was Kirsty's role as Manager Design and Environment. During this time Kirsty was responsible for: undertaking environmental impact assessment, developing and implementing an environmental management system with environmental management plans for each project area, determining suitable environmental protection methods, running workshops with stakeholders, managing stakeholders (including indigenous representatives, numerous NT Government representatives, etc.), assessing the existing infrastructure developing design guidelines and policies, developing the design management plan, preparing cost estimates, optimizing subdivision layouts for energy efficiency, managing the design team including the lead architect and design progress reporting for the Alliance. Engineering designs and maintenance works were undertaken for Umbakumba and Angurugu.

Key Program Achievements:

  • Engineering design completed on time and to a high quality standard
  • Environmental review undertaken in collaboration with rangers so as to ensure the most effective outcomes was achieved.
  • Numerous infrastructure issues were detected early allowing the program to reconsider funding arrangements and requirements prior to construction.  

Relevant Key Project Learnings:

  • Service providers need to be contacted and involved in the early stages of a project so as to ensure the requirements of the new project fits in with the existing infrastructure capacities or future plans for service upgrades.
  • Local stakeholders have the ability to fill information gaps which may not be filled by other stakeholders. It is important that a range of stakeholders be contacted regarding the project.
